A Day in the Life of a DDW Volunteer

At Dubasov we are so grateful for each and every one of our volunteers. Whether they join us for one day, one camp, one session, or one year we couldn’t be more thankful for all the energy, dedication, and fun they bring to our team! We have many volunteers who have been a part of our team for years, and one volunteer in particular who has been a part of our team almost from the very beginning! Naomi started as a volunteer in a handful of our classes, and has grown into an integral and multi-faceted part of our team. Beyond spending every Saturday supporting each program, she has also taken on administrative and teaching roles at the studio (she loves to tip tap toe!). With her experience in watching and being a part of our growth over the past six years, we asked Naomi to give us some insight into her role as a volunteer. Take a read and a sweet little peek into what it means to be a part of the DDW team!

“From day one, I knew that this was where I needed to be and the studio for me has become such a safe place, someone is always around to talk to, laugh with you and cheer you on.”

When I was asked to write about my time volunteering at the studio, I didn’t think it would be as hard as it turned out to be. I have so many AMAZING things that I can say about the time spent here and I could easily write about it for a countless number of pages! I struggle to put into words the profound impact that these programs have had on my life; from the growth that I have seen in myself as well as the appreciation for the invaluable, life long relationships I have made with the students, families, staff and volunteers. Dubasov Dance and Wellness has become a second home for me to say the least. I have been part of the studio since I was in high school and haven’t looked back since. I grew up a dancer, and I knew that my time at the studio would be nothing short of amazing. I remember my first classes like yesterday, the feelings of nervousness and excitement but feeling so incredibly inspired when watching Miss. Telisa teach and interact with her students.

I often reflect on what it is that makes the studio so special to me. I think that the number one thing is the people that are here day in and day out that I get to dance alongside. I know that everyone will agree, but I don’t know what I’d do without the constant support, appreciation, and work that Miss Telisa pours from her heart for myself, the other staff/volunteers and the students. She creates such a family like community for everyone, and welcomes all newcomers in with open arms.  I have made so many new friends with other volunteers over the years, people that I can laugh with, relate to and look to for support. I have formed relationships that I hope to never lose as we all move through our life.

When I entered this program as a volunteer in high school it was one of my first experiences out in the community and never in my life have I been part of such a positive and uplifting environment. From day one, I knew that this was where I needed to be and the studio for me has become such a safe place, someone is always around to talk to, laugh with you and cheer you on. The students you get to dance with can make you feel incredible even on the hard days. Each and every student makes you laugh and smile in their own special way and if you are ever looking for the best “monkey hugs” in the world look no further! As a volunteer I feel so incredibly blessed to be able to be a part of so many children’s lives, and to be able to watch them grow and change over the years has been nothing short of incredible.

I was lucky enough to be able to watch and experience the transformation of the company into our beautiful, brand new space in 2014, and be part of the first showcase in this space in 2015. To be part of the creation of the show is a feeling that I will never forget, the rewarding pride and the love that poured out of everybody’s heart that day makes all the hard work worth it. A feeling that was duplicated just one short year later in the 2016 showcase, and one I anxiously await for at the end of this season. It is at this time of the year that my parents/family and friends are also able come and experience something that is such a huge part of my life. In these shows they finally understand where I escape to every week and they finally know why I do what I do, and see the love that I have for these programs.

Dubasov Dance and Wellness has become more than just a volunteer opportunity, for me it has become such a huge part of my life. This studio and Miss Telisa has shaped who I am today as a person and helped to reinforce my love for dance by giving me the incredible opportunity to share in dance and expression with others. It has been the driving force that has kept me sane through the last four years of my undergraduate degree and now as I am approaching graduation I look back and see how many crucial values and influential lessons that I learned here in class that has helped me to be successful. I have grown so much since I started here. Everybody that I have had the honour to meet has taught me such perseverance and patience when chasing my dreams. I will forever hold all my experiences near and dear to my heart, and anticipate to have many more in the future. Little did I know, 5 short years ago, I would be sitting here starting my sixth amazing year with the studio, anxiously waiting to see what the new sessions will bring!
